Hopefilled People Lean on the People of God

I have had to cram into a storm shelter with my neighbors four different times this week. Almost every time a tornado warning comes up on our phone my wife and I grab the kids, walk them over to our neighbors house and climb into the storm shelter with them. It may not be the most comfortable thing in the world to have ten people crammed into a tiny storm shelter, but I’m thankful that these people are my neighbors and that my family is able to lean on them in times of need.

This is a good representation of how God created the church to be. I’m afraid we view the church as a group of people that comes together once a week to worship and then avoids each other the rest of the time. THIS. IS NOT. CHURCH. At least, it’s not how God designed the church to be.

God’s church is referred to as a body (1 Cor. 12) and a family (1 John 3:1). The church is a group that takes cares of each other’s needs (Acts 2:42-47), rejoices with each other and cries with each other (Rom. 12:15), and the church is a group that carries each other’s burdens (Gal. 6:1-2, 10).

This world can be dreadfully hopeless at times, but God has given us all we need to have hope. He’s given us His PRESENCE to embrace, the PAST to remember, His PROVISIONS to look forward to, and His PEOPLE, the church, to lean on.
