Hope for our Future is Found in our Past

I’ve always been amazed with how animals instinctively know where to go during the different phases of their life. Salmon head to their spawning grounds upstream, and birds fly south for the winter. They always seem to remember where to go. Humans on the other hand sometimes have trouble remembering what they were looking for when they walked into a room. This is just one example of many we could give as to why reminders are important.

After Israel conquers Jericho and heads into the biggest part of the Promised Land, the Lord commands them to pause for a moment, grab twelve stones and set up a memorial (Joshua 3-4). This memorial was to be a reminder of God’s deliverance of Israel both from Egypt and now into the Promised Land.

If Israel was going to be successful in their continued conquering of the Promised Land they needed to take time to reflect on the past actions of God, and the stone memorial here was the first in many reminders they would set up to remember all God had done, was doing, and would do for Israel.

If we are going to be hopefilled people, we must look back and remember what the Lord has done for us so we can better focus on what He is doing now and will do for us in the future.

For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” (Joshua 4:23-24).
