Where Hope Begins - The Presence of God

Israel found themselves in a hopeless place. The land God had promised to give them was overrun by towering cities, formidable armies, and fearsome giants. With respect to these facts, 10 of the 12 spies report "we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them" (Numbers 13:33).

For 40 years they wandered the desert until it was time for a new generation, led by Joshua, to enter into the land of towering cities, formidable armies, and fearsome giants...and this time it would be different. Joshua is commanded to "be strong and courageous" and lead Israel into the land God has already given them. Joshua and the people of Israel were to become "strong and courageous" by:

Trusting the Law (Joshua 1:3-5)

Following the Law (1:6-7)

Loving the Law (1:8)

In order for Israel to overcome their fear and hopelessness (1:9) they needed to trust, follow, and love the Law of God. In the eyes of God the land of towering cities, formidable armies, and fearsome giants was a bountiful land flowing with milk and honey. There are things in our life that make us feel as hopeless as if we were nothing more than small, weak grasshoppers. It is not until we embrace the presence of God in our lives that we can move from being hopeless to being hopefilled.
