They'll Know We Are Christians...

February 14, 2019

A common theme throughout the writing of 1 John is that of love. Twenty plus times the word “love” is used either in reference to the audience (Beloved), as an action of God, or as an action Christians are to carry out.

The most concentrated section of this theme is found midway through the letter in 1 John 3. It is in this chapter that John gives the Christian the clearest view of what love really looks like:

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

1 John 3:16-18

How do we know what love is? We know what love is because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. How do we carry out love to others? Giving, sharing, and doing.

We are the recipients of the beautiful, undeserved, magnificent, gracious love of God. As a result, we are bearers of this love to the world. Take time this week to show someone how much you love them. Remind them of your love for them. Carry the love of Jesus with you in both your heart and your hands. “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
