The Greatest Commands

February 13, 2019

In today's reading of Five Minutes with God, we read about the introduction of the Ten Commandments to Israel (Ex. 20:1-21). These commandments serve as the framework for the 700+ commandments that will follow.

Thousands of years later, Jesus would be asked the question "which is the great commandment in the Law" (Mt. 22:24-40) in an effort to try and trap Him. He responds saying:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

What are the greatest commands? Love God, and love others. It is in these two commands that the 700+ laws of Israel, including the Ten Commandments, find their purpose. Every law comes back down to loving God and/or loving others. Israel didn't know it yet, but God was laying down the foundation for Jesus' arrival. What a blessing it was to be a part of that foundation laying, and what a blessing it is now to be a part of Jesus Himself.

Today's ACTION:

All of the Ten Commandments are restated in some way (though the Sabbath is the most drastically different). For added study today, find and record New Testament passages where each of the Ten Commandments are restated.
