The Real God of Thunder

In last year's epic superhero movie, Avengers: Infinity War, there is a scene towards the end where our heroes are overwhelmed and all hope seems lost. As the enemy closes in, the sound of thunder reverberates around the battlefield and Thor, the God of Thunder, appears clearing away the threat with his incredible strength to the adulation of his fellow heroes (and moviegoers).

A line in the song "Everytime" says this "every time I watch a storm, I see the awesome power of my Lord." Thunder, lightning, and heavy rains are powerful reminders of the strength and might of our God.

In Exodus 19:1-25, Israel is party to God's grand showing of power. Try putting yourself in Israel's shoes. Not long ago you were set free from your slavery in Egypt and were heading towards a land promised to you. You find yourself standing at the base of a mountain only to be surrounded suddenly by thick clouds, thunder, and lightning. What an awe-inspiring, fearful setting! What a great reminder of the power and strength of the God of Israel.

God is still powerful and strong, able to deliver, save, and destroy. We may not always recognize His power, but God is still able to accomplish all that He desires to this day. He is also still worthy of our fear. God still causes the mountains to tremble. Praise God that we are His and that God Almighty loves us.

Today's QUESTION:

Why do you think we do not fear God much today?

Today's ACTION:

Part of being afraid of God is understanding how truly powerful He is. Write down a few examples throughout the Bible that show the strength of God. As you write these examples down, thank God that He has used that power to bring you to salvation.
