Comparing Ourselves to God

January 30, 2019

Today's reading (Ex. 6:28-7:13) shows us just how obstinate Pharaoh is going to be about letting the Israelites go to the Promised Land. In a show of God's power Aaron throws down his staff, which then turns into a serpent, to show Pharaoh just how powerful God is. In response, Pharaoh has his wise men and magicians throw down their staffs and do the same. With multiple snakes now on the ground, Aaron's breaks the stalemate by eating the other snakes.

Instead of being awestruck Pharaoh thought that anything the Israelite God could do, he could do better. Ultimately, Pharaoh was shown that anytime we compare ourselves to God, we end up coming up short.

These comparisons with God still happen today...

We compare our ability to save with God's anytime we lean on ourselves more than Him. We compare wisdom with God's wisdom when we look to ourselves instead of God to figure out a problem. We compare priorities with God when we elevate our wants over God's. There is a constant tug-of-war that takes place between us and God, and just like Pharaoh we will find ourselves on the losing end of that battle if we fail to realize the greatness of God.

Today's QUESTION(S):

What are some areas in your life where you fight (i.e. do not trust, do not rely on, etc.) God?

Why do you have those fights with God?

Today's ACTION:

One major reason we might compare ourselves with God is because we do not fully understand His character. Make a list of all the words you associate with God and then make a list full of words you associate with yourself. Beside each word/characteristic write out why you wrote that word down (try to write down Scripture for the words corresponding to God).

How do the lists compare?

Do you feel like you have an accurate/complete understanding of God based on the descriptions you wrote down?

As we go through these devotionals, we'll see God's character revealed more and more. Continue studying with us and get to know God better than you do now.
