Owning the Gospel

December 14, 2018

What is the Bible to you? A collection of nice stories, a book of good advice or something more?

In the book of 2 Timothy Paul is writing to the young preacher Timothy. This young preacher appears to not be doing what he was asked to do in the first letter (1 Timothy 1:3-5) because he is fearful and ashamed (2 Timothy 1:7-8).

In charging Timothy to pick himself up and begin the work again Paul shows himself as an example of one who isn’t ashamed or afraid. This point is proven in when Paul talks about the gospel of Christ being “my gospel” (2 Timothy 2:8).

Was Paul talking about a gospel that he preached that was contrary to God’s gospel? Absolutely not! Paul isn’t telling Timothy that he preached his own version of the gospel. He is telling Timothy about just how unashamed he was of the gospel!

Paul’s preaching of the gospel landed him in jail and even brought him suffering (2:9). Even though the gospel caused these things for Paul he still called it “my gospel.”

Paul would never be one to leave the message of God ‘sitting on his shelf’ at home. He internalized it! He made it a part of who he was! The word of God defined him.

Paul made the gospel his own. He loved the message of God so much that he couldn’t help but speak about it. Let us be a people who love the words of God so much that we cannot help but study it and tell others about it. Let it be a part of you too so that you too can call the gospel of God “my gospel.”
