Jesus Provides a Better Rest

To the Jewish people the Sabbath day was one of great importance. Serving as a reminder of God’s resting from creation (Ex. 20:8) and as a reminder of their deliverance from Egyptian slavery (Deut. 5:15) the Sabbath day was a commanded day of rest for the people of God under the old covenant.

Having established Jesus as a better messenger (Heb. 1) with a better message (Heb. 2) and a better standing in the house of God than Moses (Heb. 3) the Hebrew author knows turns his attention to a doctrinal pillar of Judaism, the Sabbath day. In Hebrews chapter 4 we read:

“For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested form his works as God did from his.”

Hebrew 4:8-10

There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, but it is not a weekly rest from our labors. No, the rest that awaits the Christian is far greater. The rest that awaits God’s people now is eternal in nature. The rest that awaits us is a rest taking place forever in the place of God where there will be no more sadness or pain, only joy forever.

Those that are Christians have a wonderful eternity to look forward to. Today may be a difficult day for you to face. You may be dealing with pains emotional and/or physical. You may be hurting or sad. Dear Christians, know that there is a perfect rest waiting for you some day soon. "Let us therefore strive to enter that rest" (Heb. 4:11).
