The Message of Jesus is Better
Last week we talked about Jesus’ superiority as a messenger (Heb. 1:3-14). As we continue through the book of Hebrews, the Hebrews writer shows us that Jesus is not only a better messenger, but that His message is of far greater substance than the former message of the old covenant.
Hebrews 1:1-4 and 2:1-4 serve as parallel or bookend passages. In both sections the messages of the Old and New Testament are compared. We are told that the Old Testament was:
Delivered by prophets of old (1:1) and
Declared by angels (2:2).
Compare this with what is said about the New Testament:
Spoken to us by God’s Son Jesus (1:2; 2:3).
Proven by witnesses (2:3).
Witnesses by God the Father Himself through signs, wonders, and miracles (2:4).
Declared through the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit (2:4).
The old covenant, which these Jewish Christians are wanting to return to, was preached mostly through created beings, men and angels. The new covenant finds messengers in men, angels, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit making it a better message.
Knowing this the Christians of old and the Christians today “must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” (2:1).
The message that Jesus brings to us is a message better than any that’s ever been told in the history of the world. We are truly blessed to have such a great message of salvation!
