“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Gal. 5:1)
Later this week people all over the country will celebrate the independence and freedom we enjoy as citizens of the United States of America. It’s been said that “freedom isn’t free” and when we look back at how our freedom was acquired, we see just how true those words are. Because of sacrifices of many in the past and the continued sacrifices of many now, we are able to enjoy the freedom we have in the United States. These earthly sacrifices are not the only sacrifices that have brought us freedom however.
Time and time again the Bible makes it clear, we are either a slave to sin or a slave to God (Rom. 6:17-20). Slaves to sin earn their wages of death and those who have been freed from their sin enjoy the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ (Rom. 6:23). This freedom from sin and eternal life comes to us through the sacrificing of Jesus Christ. It is in Him that we are able to enjoy the spiritual freedoms and blessings we are so privileged to take part in.
As you take time to focus on freedom this week, remember not only the physical freedom you have as a citizen of the United States, but the spiritual freedom you have as a citizen of the kingdom of God. Thank you Jesus for setting us free!
