A Fire in Our Bones

But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,"his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” (Jer. 20:9). These words were spoken by the prophet Jeremiah. If we look at the verse preceding we see that Jeremiah write "the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long." (Jer. 20:8). Throughout history we can read about people being persecuted for their belief in Christ. We can even look around today and see atheists and other groups attack those who believe in God. You may even "suffer" at school or work for your belief in God. However most of us don't suffer as badly as others in history have. Take Paul for example. We see in 2nd Corinthians 11:23-27 that he suffered both mentally and physically and yet he kept spreading the word! We can't be afraid of what pain we might face for Christ. We need to be like Paul, who even after suffering severe pains spread the word or like Job who suffered but didn't curse God, or like Jeremiah who was ridiculed and insulted and yet kept spreading the word! We need to be bold in our proclaiming of God and his word, not shy and intimidated into silence by the actions of others.

I encourage you this week and in the following weeks to not hold the word in but proudly tell at least one person about the hope you have in Jesus Christ!
